FCL vs LCL in plain terms
FCL (Full Container Load) is your goods alone in one box — you pay the whole container whether full or not. LCL charges by volume/weight for the space you use, consolidated with others. For sub-container volumes we can arrange LCL (less-than-container-load) consolidation; full container (FCL) is cheaper per unit above the threshold. The crossover is when your volume fills enough of a container that FCL’s flat rate beats LCL’s per-cbm rate.
When LCL actually pays off
LCL wins for trial orders, seasonal top-ups, and multi-SKU mixes under ~10–12 cbm. Above that, FCL usually wins on unit cost. It also de-risks a first order: ship 200 chairs to test a market instead of committing a container. Pair it with our MOQ guide so the floor stays low.
The real LCL cost (and the catches)
LCL adds handling fees, a consolidation charge, and sometimes higher per-cbm ocean rates. The catch is damage risk from mixed cargo and longer transit (consolidation waits for the box to fill). LCL lets you hit viable volumes across several SKUs without a full container of one. Combine it with container loading math: once a mix approaches a 40HQ, switch to FCL.
